The present Bodensee Stube was originally a cellar. It was not until 1850, during an extensive renovation by Baron Robert Lucas Pearsall, that the floor was removed to reveal the basement floors and windows were added to this room. In this way the cellar room became a chapel. The ceiling of this room was once vaulted, the floor was made of sandstone slabs and the entrance was via a staircase from the castle courtyard.
This conversion was the key to transforming the surrounding meadow into the charming castle garden that we can admire today.
The Bodensee Parlour is therefore not only a historical site, but also a witness to the constant changes and developments that Wartensee Castle has undergone over the centuries.
The room holds the history of whether the altar pieces and furnishings were brought to the Scholastika convent in Tübach by the Franciscan nuns, as believed. It is also unclear if the castle chapel, which housed the impressive early Renaissance Blarer altar mentioned in 1497 and donated by Abbot Diethelm of St. Gallen to his parents' house in 1530, was located in the west wing. What is known for sure is that this altar is now in the National Museum in Zurich, hinting at a once lavish interior.
